At the neurology clinic patients with diseases of the brain, spine, peripheral nervous system and muscles are examined and treated. Even though neurology was originally a primarily diagnostic based field, it developed to an active therapeutic discipline.
The neurology clinic of the university medical center Knappschaftskrankenhaus Bochum cooperates with the departments of neurosurgery and inner medicine - hematology / oncology - therefore having a trans-regional significance in the treatment of brain tumors. Due to this it receives multiple sponsorships by the German Cancer Aid and the German Research Association (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinsschaft, DFG).
The Ruhr-Epileptology is a university reference center for patients with epilepsy in the Ruhr Region. On an outpatient or hospitalized level it offers the entire spectrum of differential diagnosis of epileptic and non-epileptic paroxysmal events, the pharmaceutical treatment of epilepsy, the pre-surgical epilepsy diagnostic and epilepsy surgery in cooperation with the hospital’s neurosurgery department. A cooperation also exists with the pediatric clinics of the Ruhr University Bochum. For further information go here: www.ruhr-epileptologie.de.
Another focal point is the treatment of patients with movement disorders, especially Parkinson’s syndromes that are difficult to treat. In cooperation with the department of neurosurgery, these severely affected patients are treated with deep brain stimulation, brain pacemakers, and after the stereotactic implantation of these stimulating electrodes are continuously monitored.
Primary care of Strokes
In collaboration with the institute for diagnostic and interventional radiology and nuclear medicine and the neurosurgery clinic, the primary care of patients with strokes can be provided, applying all modern guidelines of stroke treatment. All diagnostic and interventional procedures are guaranteed by the institute for diagnostic and interventional radiology around the clock. The neurosurgery clinic can immediately perform life-saving procedures, for example the operative treatment of a cerebral hemorrhage or a life-threatening cerebral swelling due to a stroke. The intensive care unit allows the treatment of even the most critical diseases, including artificial respiration.
The neurology clinic does not only have a hospitalization area with beds, but also an outpatient clinic and a functional unit, that have all modern neurophysiological and ultrasound diagnostic procedures at their disposal. In addition to the medical and nursing personal, the top-performing departments of physiotherapy and physical therapies and the independent department for speech diagnostics and linguistic therapy complete the offered treatment services.
The focal points in research at the university consist of experimental and clinical treatments of brain tumors, which are continuously supported by German Cancer Aid (Deutsche Krebshilfe) and the German Research Association (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft).
