Clinic for Trauma Surgery and Orthopedics

Trauma Surgery and Orthopedics
In trauma surgery it is mandatory to always be up-to-date. Quick reaction, an exact diagnosis, often in combination with other specialists can save lives. The Knappschaftskrankenhaus has an emphasis on the treatment of injured accident victims.

In the last years orthopedic operations have gained growing significance. In addition to arthroscopic knee and hip surgery, the implantation of endoprosthesis (better known as an artificial joint replacement) has become an increasingly important work field for the clinic.

Outpatient and Hospitalized Care
In addition to hospitalized patients for which we have 35 beds available, a lot of patients are cared for with outpatient physical therapy.
Trauma surgery is attached to a large department for physiotherapy and physical therapy. Patients that have been hospitalized in trauma surgery are offered an outpatient follow-up treatment. Individual physical therapy treatment allows the patient to regain mobility in everyday life and the work place. Our aspiration is to reconstitute the quality of life from before the accident.

Diagnostic and Therapeutic Emphasis

Primary Accident Treatment

One of our focal points is all kinds of fractures in younger and older people. The collaboration with other departments such as oral maxillofacial and plastic surgery, neurosurgery and ophthalmology during the care of severely injured and polytrauma patients is a special strength of this clinic. We are fully authorized to treat work and commuting accidents.

Elective Operation

In addition to the primary care of accident victims, trauma surgery also performs a variety of traumatological and orthopedic elective surgeries. The operative intervention on large joints, especially knee and hip replacements have to be highlighted.

Minimal-invasive Trauma Surgery

Another focal point is the minimal-invasive trauma surgery. In this field all modern methods of trauma surgery on arthroscopic operations in shoulder and knee joints are performed.
