Accompanying the patients during their healing process: that is the task of about 450 staff members in the nursing services at the university medical center Knappschaftskrankenhaus Bochum. They care for, tend to and observe patients on the wards and in outpatient clinics and ensure that patients will regain health as quick as possible-24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Their core responsibility is to observe their entrusted patients, recognize their needs and react to them accordingly. Nurses help patients to stand up, carry out things necessary for daily hygiene, go to the bathroom or eat meals, change bandages and administer medication according to the doctor’s prescription. They position immobile patients professionally and in a way that prevents them from having bedsores. Nurses are the binding link between patients and doctors because they monitor the healing process by observing exterior, sleep and appetite, measure blood pressure, pulse, temperature and body weight and inform the treating doctors about it. But what should never be forgotten: kind words that give comfort, brighten the day and encourage.
