Department of Physical Therapy and Physiotherapy
- Physical Therapy
Physical therapy means the treatment of symptoms like pain and functional disabilities that originate from overexertion or degenerative processes as well as some skin diseases. Medical therapies based on physical methods are used. These include warmth, direct current, infrared and ultraviolet light, as well as mechanic treatments, such as massages.

The field of physiotherapy consists of the physiotherapeutic treatment of hospitalized patients (e.g. suffering from heart attack, arthrosis, artificial joints, stroke) from many different specialized disciplines such as neurology, inner medicine, neurosurgery, oral maxillofacial and plastic surgery and the surgery clinic with the department of trauma surgery. On the one hand, the treatment aims for natural, physiological reactions of the organism (for example muscle growth and activating the metabolism), on the other hand to improve the understanding of the organism’s functions (dysfunction, resources) and self-responsible handling of one’s own body. Goals are the reconstitution, maintenance and improvement of health and pain reduction.
After hospitalization, the Knappschaftskrankenhaus offers an outpatient follow-up for patients of trauma surgery. An individual treatment with physiotherapy allows the patient to regain movement and mobility in everyday life and at work. Therefore, the aim is to rebuild the quality of life of the past. For this, individual classes are offered, some with special added therapies, for example lymphatic drainage.
