Medical Clinic

The medical clinic has more than 141 beds available that are distributed onto four wards where all diseases of the field of inner medicine are treated. In addition to general internistic illnesses, there is an emphasis on the treatment of patients with malignant tumors, hematological diseases and gastrointestinal diseases.

The wards have the following focal points:

  • Ward 8 hematology / oncology
  • Ward 9 general inner medicine / infections
  • Ward 10 gastroenterology / gastrointestinal oncology
  • Ward 11 general inner medicine / cardiology / pneumology / endocrinology / palliative care

For critically ill people, there is an intensive care unit with ten beds that are equipped for artificial respiration. Furthermore, a ward specialized on stem cell transplants is part of the clinic where autologous and allogenic stem cell transplantations are performed.

Outpatient patients are treated in our specialized outpatient clinic. In case of emergency, the medical clinic is can always be reached through the emergency admission.

Diagnostics of diseases have a vital importance to ensure optimal treatment. For this purpose a central laboratory with sophisticated diagnostic options is available around the clock. There are many possibilities, up to and including molecular biological examinations.

An endoscopic department that is equipped on the most modern level offers important help with a detailed diagnosis and the respective therapy with methods such as endoscopy of the entire gastrointestinal and respiratory system, including endosonography. Another emphasis in the field of gastrointestinal diseases is the use of non-invasive functional tests, such as breathing tests where information about the performance of the gastrointestinal tract can be gathered without being strenuous for the patient.

An additional option is the examination of the smaller intestines via a capsule that is swallowed like a pill and takes pictures during the natural passage through the intestines, which can lead to important findings (capsule endoscopy)

The department for hematology and oncology treats patients with malignant tumors and hematological diseases. This includes a close collaboration with surgeons and radiation therapists. All modern methods for the verifications of tumors are applied. The available treatment options are chemo- , hormone or immunotherapy, as well as stem cell transplantations. Additionally, every modern diagnostic method for detecting hematological diseases is used including immunofluorescence tests and molecular biological examinations. If possible, patients with malignant tumors can also be treated in an outpatient scenario. The medical clinic is an important part of the oncological center of the Ruhr University Bochum and the intestinal cancer center that were both certified by the German Cancer Association.

Additionally, since 2011 the medical clinic manages a palliative care unit in which critically ill patients with a limited life expectancy can be cared for (go to „Palliative Care Unit“). The main goal is the reduction of symptoms, such as shortness of breath, pain and fear, to improve the quality of life. We are supporting patients and their relatives in a well-organized, highly trained, multi-disciplinary team. This team consists of different professions, such as specialty doctors and nurses, psychologists with a specialization in psycho-oncology, counselors, physical therapists, nutrition consultants and social service workers, as well as volunteers. The in/outpatient care is organized through the Palliative Network Bochum or respective networks of other cities.

A lot of diseases require the patient to learn how to self-manage therapy, accept the illness and find a way to master everyday life with it. This is especially the case with an illness as common as diabetes. In the specialized field of hormonal and metabolic diseases, the diabetes team of diabetologists and diabetes consultants (DDG) offer individualized therapy concepts and training for hospitalized and outpatient patients. With the help of practical training and personal consulting fears are removed and independence and self-trust can be built.

Patient health education plays an important role in the field of cardiovascular disease. High blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes and cardiovascular diseases are still the leading causes of death in Germany. Although, detected early enough they can often be treated well. For these diagnostics the Knappschaftskrankenhaus has a powerful cardiological diagnostic department at its disposal, performing tests such as ultrasounds for the examination of blood vessels (Doppler sonography), the heart (transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography), electro cardiogram (ECG), long-time ECG, exercise ECG, flow-directed heart catheter and highly-developed rhythm diagnostics. This also includes the implantation of cardiac pacemakers. Furthermore, lung examinations such as pulmonary function tests and spiroergometric tests are performed.

Our core concern: communication with the patient.

„The person is at the center of attention“

Even though our clinic uses the most modern technology, it is our main concern to look at the entirety of a patient from a holistic standpoint during tests and therapy. Because of this, we strive toward having close collaboration with the primary physicians and established outpatient specialists, due to it being the requirement for an effective and sustainable therapy.

The medical clinic is a university medical center of the Ruhr University Bochum. Inner medicine as a medical field is represented in lectures, seminars and practical training.
