Stroke Unit

Vision and speech disabilities, problems of understanding, one-sided paralysis or numbness, vertigo, severe head pain: Every three minutes a stroke occurs in Germany. Affected patients are best cared for in a specialized unit for diagnostics and therapy of strokes, such as the certified Stroke Unit of the university medical center Knappschaftskrankenhaus Bochum. The care is provided by a highly specialized team of doctors, nursing personnel, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, social workers and psychologists. The unit is certified by the German Stroke Society, holds a trans-regional care assignment and is integrated into the “Netzwerk Ruhrgebiet gegen Schlaganfall” (network Ruhr area against stroke), which consists of specialized neuro-stroke units.

On the stroke unit, all vital functions are monitored continuously. Strokes can be treated at any time of the day, and modern methods of diagnostics and therapy can be applied in case of other cerebral vascular diseases. Thanks to the close cooperation with the hospital’s radiology department, extensive neuroradiological techniques are available. This meets all requirements needed to care for patients in an emergency situation properly.
