Data and Facts

The university medical center Knappschaftskrankenhaus Bochum was opened in 1909 and taken over by the “Allgemeiner Knappschaftsverein” in 1918. In the following decades the hospital progressively developed leading to today’s main building being put into operation in 1972. Because of its medical level of standard the Knappschaftskrankenhaus became a university medical center for the Ruhr University Bochum in 1977.

These are the most important dates about the hospital. But what about the other numbers? Answers are given here:

  • The main building is 73 meters tall from cellar to the roof, only 55 meters are visible above the ground though.
  • If all floors of the Knappschaftskrankenhaus would be on ground level, it would measure 49,966 square meters.
  • The Knappschaftskrankenhaus has 10 operation rooms and one septic operation room.
  • 170 doctors (not including students in their last year of studies, PJ) are employed here.
  • The clinic in Langendreer trains approximately 110 nurses, 50 medical technical laboratory assistants, 6 businessmen in health care and one pharmaceutical-commercial employee
  • Annually the Knappschaftskrankenhaus treats about 20,000 stationary patients and 47,000 out-patient patients.
  • On average patients are discharged after 6.9 days.
  • Including the new electronic locks that were installed in 2011, there are 1,950 locks existing inside the house by now.
  • There are 347 fire extinguishers and 3,072 smoke detectors installed at the clinic.
  • The hospital’s kitchen cooks 11 tons of potatoes and 46,000 liters of soup every year. Additionally, there are 140,000 eggs, 450,000 small packets of sugar and 30,000 liters of fresh milk used annually.
  • The kitchen prepares 412,000 meals a year.
  • Employing 1,400 people, the Knappschaftskrankenhaus is one of Bochum’s largest employers.
  • About 600 letters are sent daily.
  • The house has 756 computer desks, 100 servers and 401 printers
  • The cleaning department needs 1,800 wet wipe cloths and 1,100 microfiber cleaning cloths.
  • About 81,000 rolls of 250 sheet toilet paper (22,250,000 pieces) and about 1,428 boxes each holding 5000 pieces of paper towels (7,140,000 pieces) are used per year.
  • The local power supplier, “Stadtwerke”, brings 10,000 volts into the hospital’s electricity network. This voltage is locally transformed into the right voltage amount for the medical and technical devices.
  • The electrical feed is located at two spots. In case of a blackout two emergency power generators are immediately turned on and one central battery supply additionally guarantees electricity.
  • The diesel powered emergency power generators are so large that they could move a ship.
